In July 2005, Fred relinquished his share interest in Kadium Ltd and Kadium Pty (South Africa) having co-founded the company in 1994. As a hands-on, editorial director / editor-in-chief with a co-publishing role, he was responsible for the editorial content, printing and design of four, successful trade magazines: Eastern European Wireless Communications; Southern African Wireless Communications; Northern African Wireless Communications and Networking+.
Prior to launching Kadium, he was managing editor for six communication technology titles within the Nexus Publishing Group – Communications News; Mobile Europe & Mobile Middle East & Africa; Mobile Asia Pacific (also launch editor); Cabling World and Mobile & Cellular. He left the company in 1991 when he was invited to take on the editorship of both Communications News and Cabling World.
Throughout the 80s, Fred was a freelance technical writer / PR consultant handling, among others, Chernikeef and its launch of the Cisco Router into the UK; Inter Innovation – a Swedish organisation that developed the first, free-standing ATM (automatic teller machine); and the launch of BT Gold (part of British Telecom), the UK’s first email system, which operated via a phone coupler in a suitcase.
He entered journalism following an early career as an engineering draughtsman working on Military Vehicle contracts. His initial focus was in the engineering publishing sector, writing for Maintenance Engineering magazine (invited to return as editor), Power & Works Engineering, plus Factory and Works Management.
